Royal Philips Electronics is one of the world’s biggest electronics companies and Europe’s largest. It is a global leader in Healthcare, Lifestyle and Technology based product and service solutions. In the recent years, Philips has made its permanent foot print in the manufacturing of digital photo frames also. It has produced some of the best and most popular picture frames. This company has decided to expand its line in introducing frames of 6, 7 and 8 inches providing feasibility in providing unparalleled screen colour and contrast. Philips’s latest release is 8FF3FPW which features the photo enhancement technology that nurtures the colour and contrast of the display.

Design:

Not only the digital picture frames, but most of the products of Philips have a sleek and stylish design that certainly attracts style conscious consumers. Philips 8FF3FPW digital picture frame is no exception as it has a durable and attractive gloss white bezel and chrome stand and this model is also available in black which when opted suits your modern decor. The stand is unfortunately not adjustable though most of the times, its present position is fine, you may want to change it depending on where you are going to actually place it. This picture frame measures 9.6 x 6.6 x 4.8″ (W x H x D) and weighs around 1.09 pounds.

Display:

Philips 8FF3FPW Digital picture frame does not disappoint us when it comes to the display feature. The eight inch LCD display is excellent with a resolution of 800 x 600 pixels. The details are presented well and the colours are also very vibrant. Both the horizontal and vertical views produce above average images. Philips employs high pixel density to have sharp and detailed photo display. The imagen which is an exclusive Philips photo enhancement technology, automatically analyses your photos to correct colour and adjust for optimal contrast. Imagen separates colours to avoid “crosstalk”, adjusts brightness distribution for great visual contrast and corrects Gamma for colour accuracy. Options are provided for you to rotate, crop and zoom them. The screen has an aspect ratio of 4:3 providing best viewing experience, a contrast ratio of 300:1 and a brightness range of 250cd/m2. The viewing angle is at 130º for the horizontal plane and 110º for the vertical plane.

RadiantColor is an exclusive Philips technology for displaying smaller photos in the optimal 4:3 ratio by extending the colour on the edges of a less-than-full-screen photo to the sides of the screen, eliminating black bars and aspect ratio distortion.

Features:

Philips 8FF3FPW/27 8″ LCD Digital Photo frame supports most of the memory cards such as SDHC Compact Flash type I, Secure Digital, Secure Digital SDHC, Multimedia Card, xD card, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, Memory Stick Duo and Memory Stick Pro Duo. This frame also has a side mounted USB port which means you can take USB flash drive also as a source.

JPEG is the only picture file format that the photo frame can support. The frame can hold up to 10MB of JPEG files of 20 mega pixels.

This 8 inch Philips 8FF3FPW LCD Picture frame has variable orientation features that allow the users to choose from the viewing modes like auto, portrait and landscape. Automatic landscape/portrait recognition employs a sensor that recognises Photo Frame orientation and displays each photo in its proper mode.

The navigational options include thumbnail, slideshow, collage and full screen. The collage form, automatically and randomly compiles different photos together, eliminating unattractive borders that may result from photos that are smaller than the screen size.

A few tweaks are provided in the slideshow settings and photo effects. The various slideshow settings includes random, sequential, and transition effect. The different photo effects include black & white, frames, sepia, and radiant color.

Philips has omitted the speakers which is unforgivable. Since there are no speakers, you do not have the option of playing music as the slide shows are presented. The only sound feature that the player sports is the alarm facility which can be set to trigger at some time daily or on a specific day of a week, but this sound is not loud either. The other features include the auto power “on/off” and the frame supports a number of languages like English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Dutch, Danish, Russian, Simplifies Chinese, and Japanese.

The start-up is a three step process. First plug in the AC adapter, then fix the stand and just turn the unit on. The package includes the photo frame itself, an AC adapter, a USB cable, a quick start guide and a user manual on the CD. The Philips 8FF3FPW LCD digital photo frame is compatible with Microsoft Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Apple Mac OS X operating systems.

Though the LCD player does a great job, the controls that are poorly implemented and the over-doze of cost may turn-off the consumers.
